Overview
Tin (Sn) General Information:
Tin is also known as:Stannum, element symbol Sn. A carbon family element with an atomic number of 50 and an atomic weight of 118.71. Metal tin is soft and easy to bend, with a melting point of 231.89°C and a boiling point of 2260°C. White tin in its ordinary form is a low melting point metal with a silvery white luster. It is divalent or tetravalent in the compound and will not be oxidized by air at room temperature. Tin has three allotropes: white tin is a tetragonal crystal system, unit cell parameters: a=0.5832nm, c=0.3181nm, unit cell contains 4 Sn atoms, density 7.28g/cm3, hardness 2, good ductility .
Gray tin is a diamond-shaped cubic crystal system. The unit cell parameter is: a=0.6489nm. The unit cell contains 8 Sn atoms and the density is 5.75g/cm3.
Brittle tin is an orthorhombic crystal system with a density of 6.54g/cm3.

Tin metal is mainly used to make alloys. It is widely used in the atomic energy industry, electronic industry, semiconductor devices, superconducting materials, and spacecraft manufacturing industry.
Tin can also be used to make a variety of tin utensils and art objects, such as tin pots, tin cups, tin tableware, etc. Metal tin can also be made into tin tubes and tin foil, which are used in the food industry to ensure cleanliness and non-toxicity. Such as tin foil for packaging candies and cigarettes, which is both moisture-proof and beautiful. In industry, tin is often plated on copper wires or other metals to prevent these metals from being corroded by acids and alkalis. Tin-based bearing alloys composed of tin and antimony-copper and lead-based bearing alloys composed of lead, tin, and antimony can be used to manufacture bearings for steam turbines, generators, aircraft and other mechanical equipment that withstand high speed and high pressure.
