Physical and chemical properties
The rhombohedral crystal structure of bismuth selenide. Black crystalline substance. Density 6.82g/cm3. Melting point 710 ℃. Insoluble in alkali, easily decomposed by concentrated acid and aqua regia.
It is prepared by the direct reaction of selenium and bismuth or by the action of bismuth oxide and hydrogen selenide. It is a semiconductor material and a thermoelectric material.
Application
It is a semiconductor and is a thermoelectric material. Bismuth selenide with perfect stoichiometry is a semiconductor with a bandwidth of 0.3 eV, and its selenium holes are electron donors, chemically similar to semimetals. In bismuth selenide, topologically protected surface states are observed.
