The element is a soft, silver-white transition metal, often mixed with gadolinium, erbium, etc. Scandium is slightly light yellow or pink when oxidized by air, is easily weathered and slowly dissolves in most dilute acids. However, in strong acid, an impermeable passivation layer is easily formed on the surface, so it does not react with the 1:1 mixture of nitric acid (HNO3) and hydrofluoric acid (HF). Scandium is often used to make special glasses and lightweight, high-temperature-resistant alloys.
