Overview

Physical and chemical properties

Silicon monoxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula of SiO. It is a black-brown to loess-colored amorphous powder at room temperature and pressure, with a melting point of 1702°C, a boiling point of 1880°C, and a density of 2.13g/cm³. It dissolves in the mixed acid of dilute hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid and releases silicon tetrafluoride, which produces white silicon dioxide powder when heated in air.

Silica is less stable and oxidizes to silica in air. When silicon monoxide vapor slowly condenses, it disproportionates (see disproportionation) to form silicon and silicon dioxide.

It is a dark brown to loess amorphous powder with white cubic crystals.

Application:

Because of its high activity, silicon monoxide micropowder can be used as a raw material for fine ceramic synthesis, such as silicon nitride and silicon carbide fine ceramic powder raw materials.

It is used for the preparation of optical glass and semiconductor materials. It is evaporated in vacuum and coated on the metal mirror surface for optical instruments as a protective film. Preparation of semiconductor materials.
