Overview
Physical and chemical properties:
Boron Powder: mr10 81。 ρ= 2.37g/cm3 (amorphous); 2.34 ~ 2.46g/cm3 (crystal). Melting point 2177 ~ 2301 ℃; Boiling point 2550 ~ 2658 ℃
boron has the largest volume heat, and the weight heat is second only to beryllium. Slightly soluble in nitric acid, insoluble in water
amorphous boron is chemically active. Powder and air can form explosive mixture. Boron anhydride was reduced with magnesium to produce amorphous boron
for solid ramjets and smokeless clean propellants
elemental boron is a black or dark brown powder. When oxidized in air, the continuous oxidation of internal boron is hindered due to the formation of boron trioxide film. It can react with fluorine at room temperature and is not corroded by hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid aqueous solution. Boron is insoluble in water. Powdered boron can be dissolved in boiling nitric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as most molten metals such as copper, iron, manganese, aluminum and calcium.
Application fields:
Boron is mainly used in metallurgy, electronics, medicine, ceramics, nuclear industry, chemical industry, etc. It is used in the form of compounds or added to alloys as additional materials. It can be used in the smelting of special alloy steel and as a gas scavenger for molten steel, in the ignition electrode of the ignition tube in the electronics industry, in the control rod in atomic reactors and as high-energy rocket fuel; it is an important raw material for the manufacture of high-purity boron halide. It is a raw material for the preparation of various borides; it can replace and save a large number of precious and olefin-deficient metals; boron and its compounds can also be used as catalysts for organic chemical reactions, etc.
