Hafnium, symbol Hf, atomic number 72, atomic weight 178.49. The element is a shiny silver-gray transition metal.The melting point is 2227 ℃, the boiling point is 4602 ℃, it is insoluble in water, and the density is 13.31 g/cm3. Hafnium is a plastic metal and becomes hard and brittle when impurities are present. It is stable in air and only darkens on the surface when burned. The filament can be ignited with the flame of a match. Properties similar to zirconium. It does not react with water, dilute acid or strong alkali, but is easily soluble in aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid.

Hafnium is useful because it readily emits electrons (eg, as filament in incandescent lamps). Used as cathodes in X-ray tubes, alloys of hafnium and tungsten or molybdenum are used as electrodes in high-voltage discharge tubes. Commonly used in X-ray cathodes and tungsten wire manufacturing industries. Pure hafnium has plasticity, easy processing, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, and is an important material in the atomic energy industry. Hafnium has a large thermal neutron capture cross-section, making it an ideal neutron absorber and can be used as control rods and protective devices in atomic reactors. Hafnium powder can be used as a rocket propeller. In the electrical industry, cathodes of X-ray tubes can be manufactured. Hafnium alloys can be used as front-end protective layers for rocket nozzles and gliding re-entry vehicles. Hf-Ta alloys can be used to make tool steel and resistance materials. Hafnium is used as an additive element in heat-resistant alloys.
