Overview

Physical and chemical properties

Lithium fluoride is a salt, chemical formula: LiF, appearance and properties: white powder or cubic crystal. It is an alkali metal halide, white crystal at room temperature, insoluble in water. It can be obtained by crystallization of lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide and hydrofluoric acid in a lead dish or a platinum dish.

Appearance and Properties: White powder or cubic crystal.

Melting point (℃): 848℃

Relative density (water=1): 2.6350

Boiling point (°C): 1681°C (volatile at 1100-1200°C)

Solubility in water: 0.27g/100g water

Saturated vapor pressure (kPa): 0.133/1047℃

Solubility: slightly soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol, soluble in acid.

Soluble in acid, insoluble in alcohol and other organic solvents. At room temperature, lithium fluoride is easily soluble in acid.

Application

1. Used as nuclear industry, enamel industry, optical glass manufacturing, desiccant, flux, etc.

2. In the ceramic industry, it is used to reduce kiln temperature and improve thermal shock resistance, abrasion resistance and acid corrosion. Flux for metal welding with other fluorides, chlorides and borates. It is the basic component of fluorine electrolytic cell electrolyte. It is used as an electrolyte component in a molten state in a high temperature battery. as a carrier in a breeder reactor.

3. It is widely used in fluxes and fluxes of aluminum and magnesium alloys and also used as additives to improve electric efficiency in electrolytic aluminum industry;

4. Used as a neutron shielding material in the atomic energy industry, as a solvent in molten salt reactors; as a transparent window for ultraviolet rays in optical materials (transmittance 77-88%).
