Antimony (Sb) General Information:
Antimony, element symbol Sb, atomic number 51, is a silver-white, shiny, hard and brittle metal (often made into various shapes such as rods, blocks, powders, etc.) with a Mohs hardness of 3. Therefore, pure antimony cannot be used to make hard objects. It has a scaly crystal structure. It gradually loses its luster in humid air, and burns into white antimony oxide under strong heat. Easily soluble in aqua regia and soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid. The relative density is 6.68, the melting point is 630°C, the boiling point is 1635°C, the atomic radius is 1.28Å, and the electronegativity is 2.2.
The main use of antimony is that its oxide antimony trioxide is used to make refractory materials. Lead-antimony alloy plates used in lead-acid batteries. Antimony is alloyed with lead and tin to improve the performance of welding materials, bullets and bearings. Antimony compounds are important additives for a wide range of chlorine- and bromine-containing flame retardants. Antimony is also widely used in emerging microelectronics technologies, such as AMD graphics card manufacturing.
